  • ALA Youth Media Awards
    Each year the American Library Association (ALA) honors books and media for children and teens. Recognized worldwide for the high quality they represent, ALA awards, including the prestigious Newbery, Caldecott, Printz, and Coretta Scott King Book Awards, guide parents, educators, librarians and others in selecting the best materials for youth. Selected by committees composed of librarians and other literature and media experts, the awards encourage original and creative work in the field of children’s and young adult literature and media. Winners are announced annually at the ALA Midwinter Meeting of the association (usually in January).
  • Banned Books Week 2009 Press Kit

    Banned Books Week (BBW): Celebrating the Freedom to Read is observed during the last week of September each year. Observed since 1982, this annual ALA event reminds Americans not to take this precious democratic freedom for granted. BBW celebrates the freedom to choose or the freedom to express one’s opinion even if that opinion might be considered unorthodox or unpopular and stresses the importance of ensuring the availability of those unorthodox or unpopular viewpoints to all who wish to read them.

  • National Gaming Day Press Kit
    On November 14, 2009, libraries across the country will participate in the largest, simultaneous national video game tournament ever held! Kids will be able to compete against players at other libraries and see their scores in real-time online while playing at their local library.
  • National Library Week 2009 Press Kit
    National Library Week is a national observance sponsored by the ALA and libraries across the country each April. It is an annual celebration of the contributions of our nation's libraries, librarians and library workers.
  • The Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study Press Kit
    The Public Library Funding & Technology Access Study (PLFTAS) is the largest and longest running study of its kind. The survey is conducted by the American Library Association (ALA), the University of Maryland-College Park and Florida State University. It is funded by the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation and ALA. The study will provide information from public libraries regarding their Internet connectivity, public computing, technology training, and other public library roles as public access technology centers in their communities.
  • Slow economy fuels surge in library visits Press Kit

    According to the ALA’s 2008 State of America’s Libraries Report, Americans visited their libraries nearly 1.3 billion times and checked out more than 2 billion items in the past year, an increase of more than 10 percent in both checked out items and library visits, compared to data from the last economic downturn in 2001.
